Description

Roy Orbison's In Dreams album is similar to Sings Lonely and Blue, mixing country, rock and pop elements, though in somewhat different proportions — the country side of the music is suppressed a bit, however, in favor of the pop and rock sides of Orbison's sound. There's also the much greater presence of both acoustic guitars on one end of the sound spectrum and orchestral accompaniment on the other in several of the songs. The highlights include "Shadaroba," "Candy Man," "Dream," and "My Prayer," although in truth there's not a wasted track anywhere on the album. The range of songs is alsomore… far wider than on Orbison's prior recordings, from covers of contemporary hits by the Platters to standards by Stephen Foster; amazingly, his rendition of "Beautiful Dreamer" manages to avoid hokeyness: Orbison puts so much feeling into the lyric and the melody, and the piece is treated with such restraint; the other surprise is his version of "All I Have to Do Is Dream," which in the stereo mix uses an electric guitar in juxtaposition to a densely recorded string section for an alluring contrast of timbres beneath Orbison's powerful vocals. As with Sings Lonely and Blue, producer Fred Foster makes superb use of the album's stereo mix to create a unique sound. Throughout the album, there's also a tighter band sound at the core of the songs, beneath the strings and choruses, than on the earlier album. It's still country-pop with a rock beat — and remarkably consistent given that it draws from 18 months' worth of recording — but a little less country and a bit more sophisticated pop.
