Description

This Dutch compilation has precious few annotations, but it does note on its back cover, "Tracks licensed from Orbison Records Incorporated." For Orbison fans, the significance of that notation is that these are not the original recordings of hits like "Only the Lonely" and "Oh, Pretty Woman." Rather, aural evidence suggests that the album is a combination of the 1980s re-recordings Orbison made of his early-'60s Monument Records hits (originally released in 1987 on Virgin Records' In Dreams: The Greatest Hits) with the original recordings of a few of the minor hits he scored with MGM Recordsmore… in the mid-'60s, such as "Breakin' Up Is Breakin' My Heart," which presumably are now the possession of Orbison Records Incorporated. There are also a couple of interview segments in which Orbison explains how he came to wear sunglasses all the time and how he would like to be remembered. Of course, this kind of collection has to be docked for being deceptive; the title Gold certainly implies that the hit recordings have been included.
