Thirteen years after the release of their last full-studio album, former Fine Young Cannibals front man Roland Gift returns with his self-titled solo debut. The ultimate follow-up to 1989's The Raw and The Cooked, Gift seamlessly continues where FYC's "cutting-edge" five-million-selling, second album left off. The voice is still awesome, and although the songs are all finely polished the musical style now sounds slightly dated. Tracks "Looking For A Friend" and "Flown" are affable album high points, others like "Say It Ain't So" descend into album-filler nonsense. Perhaps in a haphazard ploy tomore… sound more contemporary the opening to "It's Only Money" (and the overall message) sounds very similar to Destiny's Child's "Bills, Bill, Bills". After having been out of the limelight for so long, Roland's own self-doubt also regularly crops up on this release, for example on the symbolically titled, album-opener "Tell Me You Want Me Back". The lyrics to "Lady DJ" could also be read in a similar light ("Please lady DJ play my record on your show"). Although unlikely to be heard by anyone outside of the FYC "heritage" market, it's good to know that Gift's still there, and still has the potential to make great music.--John Galilee
