Ah, the summer of 1975. When we were all Rod Stewart fans, and it was totally acceptable ! I love this album then, and yes, I still do.This was Rod's "stateside" crossover album, hence the title and cover art. He left behind the country/folk twinges of his early 70s solo work (not a fiddle or mandolin to be found here) and opted instead for the drivetime sound of a tour bus somewhere in New Mexico. You can feel the heat at the truckstops on the first few cuts here - "Three Time Loser" (a somwhat crude song concerning VD); "Alright For An Hour" and "All In The Name Of Rock 'n'Roll" (with a namecheckmore… for Paul McCartney). Rod's take on Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" is sensational and if there's a better cover of "This Old Heart Of Mine" I've yet to hear it. It almost matches, if not betters in places, the Isley Brothers' original.I once read a review which said this album sounds great the first time you hear it, but it has no stayng power. To a certain extent I would have to agree, but playing it again thirty years later, it does indeed sound great. Maybe that is the trick.This is still a credible album, unlike the post 1978 fare Rod served up. The standard of musicianship, including the legendary Steve (Stax) Cropper, is incredibly high. As an example of a great mid 70s accessible rock album, you can't go too far wrong.
