Description

You'll remember The Datsuns from the rabble of bands operating back in 2002 under the vaguely preposterous banner of the nu rock revolution. You may recall that they were invited to the fight almost exclusively because the infectious, far-out riffing of their single "Harmonic Generator" was so very awesome. A feat that they never quite repeated with their continued ram-raiding of Deep Purple's and Thin Lizzy's back catalogues. If that was the revolution (and really, change seemed like the last thing on their minds back then) then welcome, at long last, to the occupation. Three albums in and theremore… finally seems to be some justification, and context, for the spiralling myriad of unending solos and raw macho posturing that made their second album Out of Sight/Out of Mind a kind of self fulfilling prophesy. As opposing as these characteristics might be, they've managed to both mature and cut loose more impulsively. The riffs of course still come on so thick and fast that nothing is given the chance to fall through the cracks. "Who Are You Stamping Your Foot For" is a convincingly frantic burst of hedonism like the MC5 jousting with The Who in such a fashion that they'd have surely nicked The Hives crown, were they still modelling it these days. Epic 7-minute closer "Too Little Fire" conversely stomps, legs astride, between Led Zeppelin granite psychedelia, Queens Of The Stone Age fug and Slash riffology, almost (almost!) nudging into Yes-style prog territory. It's been quite a journey from the liquor'n'ladies transparency of their debut. --James Berry
