Description

During their heyday the progressive (nee classical) rock group Renaissance was probably most popular in the northeastern United States, which is why in retrospect it is not all that surprising that they were the first British rock band to sell out Carnegie Hall for three consecutive nights. The 1976 double-album set "Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall" features the group, backed by members of the New York Philharmonic conducted by Tony Cox (who did the orchestrations on "Song of Scheherazade." The album pretty much doubles as a greatest hit compilation since it features what most fans would considermore… their best work from their first four albums. The strengths of this album are that it contains an extended version of "Ashes Are Burning," which was the group's encore piece of choice since it allowed ample opportunities for solos by all of the band members, and that several of the older works such ("Carpet of the Sun" and "Can You Understand?") are arranged in ways arguably superior to the original studio versions. However, what should have been the showcase performance of the album, the live performance of the Scheherazade suite from the 1975 Renaissance album, has numerous rough spots and a few outright mistooks. Overall the album is well worth listening to and it is particularly pleasing to see how well Annie Haslam's voice holds up through an entire night of vocal pyrotechnics, soaring over and above the lush melodies and full orchestrations.
