I first heard a little snatch of Ramsey Lewis on the film Casino and I re-wound the tape so much that this fantastic passage of film and music has been reduced to a fuzzy crackle. I bought this compilation, hoping for something pretty good and I got much much more. The opener 'The In Crowd,' has so much rhythym you can't HELP but dance, Hang On Sloopy with its infectious chorus, Function At the Junction with its amazing peaks of piano jazz glory, inspired covers of Dancing In The Street and Uptight - all transcribed so that the full effect and tune comes shooting through. This isn't full ofmore… piano jazz that tapers off into self indulgence; instead what you get is very tight, rhythmical funky jazz. In fact, this album is so damn good it has the dubious honour of being my alarm call on my stereo. Which is saying something.
