Description

During the 1980's Queen seemed to lose their nerve somewhat (probably after the failure of their experimental disco album `Hot Space') and the band put out a string of very professional but slightly soulless records, concentrating on highly commercial radio friendly pop tunes and big stadium rock songs. With no need to worry about whether the songs would translate to a live setting and with Freddie rapidly approaching his end `Innuendo', the bands 14th and last studio album, is the first album in a long time to hark back to the bands classic `70's style by being a great collection of interestingmore… music, rather than a string of potential chart hits: indicative of this was the bands decision to release the longest and least commercial track on the album as the lead off single (which promptly shot to number 1 anyway). Freddie's voice sounds better than it has done for years (presumably due to giving up smoking) and ironically that just as time was running out for Queen they seemed to gaining a new creative lease of life. `Innuendo' may not be a perfect album - the lyrics for `Hitman' are pretty poor and `All God's People' sails close to Cliff Richard religious territory (though this is fair enough considering the gospel nature of the track), but this is still the bands best album for many a year, and ensures that Queen ends on a high.
