This is regarded as Porcupine Trees most progressive styled recording. This is partly due to the long title track being split into two sections, in a similar fashion to “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” from Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here”. But there the similarities end. Steven Wilson uses the space afforded by the long form approach to explore different musical avenues, from prog rock, space rock through to trance and techno resulting in a glorious composition. Wilson has used the opportunity in remastering this album to actually re-record sections, adding real drumsmore… on a couple of tracks which he could not do during the original recording. Extra tracks have been added as well as an alternative version of the tile track to make this release into an expanded 2 CD package. The remastered sound on this is quite exceptional. Nuances and detail not heard before are now brought to the fore. I particularly love the “Phase 2” section as it builds up to one of Wilson’s best ever guitar solos. This is the third in the series of remastered and expanded releases of the Delerium recordings and a splendid job it is too. I eagerly await the others in the series, especially “Up the Downstair”
