I've called this review "Uneasy listening", but it is absolutely meant as a compliment. Having been recommended Patricia Barber's work a number of times over the years, this is the first time I've actually heard a whole album and hey! I'm converted!Her voice has something of the warm huskiness of Diana Krall, but, other than that she's also a gifted piano player, comparisons end there. The lyrics are complex and more akin to blank verse than songs; the backing (especially the guitarist who's obviously been listening to his Bill Frisell albums)is sparse, but absolutely appropriate for the songsmore…
