Description
12 years, 8 albums, all masterpieces in their own way and all completely distinguishable from the last. Lacrimosa's track record can and should be envied by all artists who fail to achieve a similar legacy (i.e. pretty much all of them). So it's a pity that their unique style, combining orchestra, heavy metal, choirs, haunting piano melodies, and some stuff that just doesn't fit into any definition anywhere, plus the fact that they sing almost entirely in German, damn them to obscurity even in their own country, let alone in Britain. That said, onto the album. Put simply, Lacrimosa continues tomore… amaze me with their. Every track on the album is different from the last, from the opening orchestral 'Kyrie', to the sombre 'Eine Nacht In Ewigkeit', through the frankly strange 'Sacrifice', and all evolve and improve on what Lacrimosa has done before.Perhaps the best thing is that Echos collects all the bits that were good about Lacrimosa's previous albums and fits them in somewhere. The male unison from Inferno's 'Kabinett Der Sinne' that was probably the best thing about the album? After never being used again for three albums, it resurfaces on the final 'Die Schreie Sind Verstummt' (my current favourite song of all time, by the way). 'Kyrie' is also reminscent of 'Sanctus', only far, far better. 'Apart', the obligatory song with Anne Nurmi as lead, also finally completely buries the tradition of these being the weak point on the album. There's no attempt to do 'Liebesspiel' again, which may disappoint some, but 'Malina' more than makes up for it with a similarly fast pace.Of course, statistically most people reading this won't have heard any of Lacrimosa's previous work. But to be honest, trying to describe Lacrimosa's music to someone who hasn't heard them before is virtually impossible. So do yourself a favour: borrow *ahem* the single 'Durch Nacht Und Flut' from a *ahem* friend *ahem*, listen to it, and make up your own mind. I won't swear that you'll fall in love. But if you do, Lacrimosa's music will make any music you fell in love with before seem like nothing. In closing, the question that was on my lips when Echoes was released: is it better than Fassade? Answer: hmm... maybe. If you haven't listened to Lacrimosa before, I would definitely recommend this as a starting point over all the rest. Personally I prefer Fassade... just. But as I've said before, all Lacrimosa's albums are great in their own way, and while they have clearly refined and improved their style since the beginning, their best is purely a matter of opinion.
