Description

The pianist assembled a noteworthy line-up for this ambitious double-LP session, switching between two versions of his working quartet, one featuring tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, the other guitarist Sam Brown. Charlie Haden and Paul Motian provided bass and drums throughout, with Airto Moreira adding percussion on most of the selections. Unnamed brass and string sections are used on five tracks. CBS left Jarrett to his own devices, but broke their contract just two weeks after the release of what was to be his only album for the label. You can read Keith's own notes to glean his rather vaguemore… conceptual justifications but it's probably best to just go right ahead and listen to the music. It has rugged tendencies not found in most of the Jarrett catalogue, his compositions willing to invite ideas from gospel, soul and rock, roughed up by Redman and Brown, both of whom provide frequent jaw-tensing solos, particularly on the Ornette Coleman-ish "Roussillion", the dirty, Rolling Stones-ey "Take Me Back" and the turbulent solo-sparring "Sundance". Jarrett also plays soprano saxophone and organ, vehicles for some abrasive episodes, his piano solos usually flowing along more romantic currents, as with the title track and the extended rumination of "Nomads". --Martin Longley
