I have given every Oscar Peterson CD that I have reviewed 5 stars, and for each one I have finished by saying something along the lines of "get this album, you need it." Well, this is going to be no exception; if you have the money to spend, by all means buy it, you won't be disappointed.Now to tell you about the album and what to expect from it. The majority of the tracks are recorded with a trio of Sam Jones [b] and Bobby Durham [d], but there are appearances from Ray Brown, Louis Hayes and Ed Thigpen as well. Recorded over a period of a few years in a private studio in front of an audiencemore… of little more than 15, the trio, regardless of personnel changes, never loses their form, and on each CD you are guaranteed brilliance. For example, "Noreen's Nocturne" on CD2 will amaze you with terrifically speedy melodic improvising from OP and some of the best drum breaks I have ever heard. There are also fantastic versions of "Summertime", "Emily" and "Sometimes I'm Happy" which deserve a mention. The last CD features OP solo playing some great standards, and although I'm less enthusiastic about his solo piano, there are great versions of "Take the 'A' Train" and "Perdido".
