Often, the difficulty for European artists in the UK is the language barrier. The assumption by European artists is that the public won't warm to something that sounds "foreign". It's an assumption that is unfortunately largely true. Which is a pity.Wir Sind Helden occupy the same space as Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party and The Killers. They look and sound arty, they're intelligent, they've got tunes you can dance and sing to.They just happen to be German.The album is choc full of, what in Germany should be, big-selling singles. 'Gekommen Um Zu Bleiben'more…; has an infectious bass line, 'Nur Ein Wort' a glorious chorus and 'Ein Elefant Für Dich' is sweet and at the same time, just a little strange (The title literally means 'An Elephant For You'). Judith Holofrenes' voice manages to be ethereal yet cheeky with varying intensity, often switching between the two in the space of a line.It's funky, it's singable, it's clever, what more do you want from an indie band?Just don't be put off by the German. Think of it as adding to the album's charm.
