Description

Mike Stern was the Strat abuser from Miles Davis's 1982 comeback band. Mike had also done time with Blood Sweat & Tears and played in a duet with Jaco Pastorius before this fantastic 1986 debut. Produced by another underrated fusion guitarist Hiram Bullock, this record is simply an excuse for Mike to play the hell out his guitar in a variety of idioms. The uptempo tracks are bebop-flavoured compositions which stretch out into typically fiery solos, while the ballads demonstrate Stern's lyrical side, his Telecaster screaming emotively above Dave Weckl's subtle drumming.Jaco Pastorius completistsmore… will enjoy his guest performance here (and it's one of his very last), and David Sanborn's cameo on 'Goodbye Again' is spine-tingling. But this is simply a must for any lover of over-the-top guitar playing and complex, angular compositions. There's no-one quite like Stern at the top of his game, at times sounding like a bizarre fusion of Charlie Parker and Carlos Santana.
