Infinite Love Songs is the magical debut album from Maximilian Hecker, who began his musical career as a busker on the streets of his native Berlin, playing Oasis songs--and a handful of his own solo compositions--to disinterested passers-by. The tracks here date back to that period, although you'd never guess: these 12 tracks of lush guitar-pop feel polished and complete, a million miles from any ragged road-side composition. Hecker's smooth falsetto is the immediate touchstone--clear and unsullied, the very polar opposite of Jeff Buckley's cracked, ragged high-end--and it's inevitably this whichmore… leads the songs, rather than the music. "Polyester" and "Let Me Out" are fine examples of Hecker's songwriting at its most touching and simplistic, and while the title track beckons dub-tinged electronic into Hecker's design with some success, ultimately, his greatest moments come when the instrumentation is stripped down, and he tackles his songs bare: the piano-accompanied lullaby heart-break of "The Days Are Long and Filled with Pain" is a heart-breaker with few comparisons. --Louis Pattison
