Description

In the later years of his short recording career, Joe Oliver was plagued by ill health, including gum disease, and he employed pickup bands on sessions, using members of the Luis Russell, Carroll Dickerson, and Earl Hines groups on some of these New York and Chicago dates. But Oliver was a great bandleader, and the results are often superb jazz, with artful contributions from Omer Simeon and Barney Bigard on reeds and the contrasting trombone styles of the elegant J.C. Higginbotham and the more forceful Jimmy Archey. Oliver could still recapture his former playing glory on occasion: there's amore… remarkable version of his "West End Blues" in which he duplicates Louis Armstrong's recently recorded solo. When he couldn't play, the man who had tutored Armstrong had the sense to hire Bubber Miley, Red Allen, and Louis Metcalf to share the trumpet load. Two fascinating sessions with Roy Smeck might be considered a form of jazz-country "fusion," Oliver's muted cornet mixing with Smeck's Hawaiian steel guitar on a rendition of country singer Jimmie Rodgers's "Everybody Does It in Hawaii" and with Smeck's harmonica on the traditional ballad "Frankie and Johnny." --Stuart Broomer
