Description
This album (the original format featured tracks 1 to 8 and not the live stuff) should have been the launch pad for Magnum to achieve greatness. Sure, they went on to gain a restricted popularity, but they just fell short of their true potential....ultimately resulting in their demise. 'Chase the Dragon' is a solid, quality album, with high production values, tight musicianship, and songwriting which combined Magnum's fantasy genre ideals with an almost pop-song accessabilty. Catley's vocals are stupendous, while Clarkin (not the most articulate of lead guitarists) peppers his songs with infectiousmore… hooks. Just listen to the chorus of 'The Lights Burned Out', or the guitar riff/vocal interplay of 'Walking the Straight Line'. Excellent Stuff. The standout tracks are 'The Spirit' and 'Sacred Hour'. The former with its intricate harpsicord endowed verse and pounding chorus, the latter a glorious slab of pomp rock. Aside from these moments, the rest of the songs are complimentary to the album as a complete work, each track staying way ahead of filler status. What the album lacks is what the next Magnum album should have been had the band, and Clarkin as songwriter, taken that next step up the developmental ladder. Songs like 'We All Play The Game' and 'On the Edge of the World', taken out of their context on 'Chase The Dragon', fine though they are, are not of the high calibre of other tracks on the album. However, a blue print was created with 'Chase..' which should have heralded the arrival of that absolute gem of a record. What followed in 'Eleventh Hour', 'Story Tellers Night' et al, were albums which still contained moments of songwriting greatness, but which were less cohesive as a whole than 'Chase..'. Magnum's last couple of albums, which were aimed at breaking America, were vastly overdone and awash with a commercialism that didn't quite work. 'Chase The Dragon' is still a great listen, and is representative of a band which had the talent to dominate the world, and was on the right tracks until it hit a brick wall.
