Description
Something that not a lot of English people know is that American Beatles LPs were dramatically different from the British collections. American LPs usually only contained eleven or twelve songs, due to contractural requirements, and always, by tradition, contained the hit single and its B-side. Singles were what was used to sell LPs, it was assumed that people wouldn't buy an LP unless they'd heard at least the hit single taken from it. Also, the Beatles had released their first LP, "Please Please Me" in the spring of 1963, and their second effort, "With The Beatles," in November of 1963.more… Capitol Records (EMI's American branch) didn't think the Fabs' first LP was very good and chose not to release it in the US, when "With the Beatles" was released with its historic single, they gave the Beatles a second chance, in January 1964. They removed almost all of the cover songs from the LP, adding 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' and its US B-side 'I Saw Her Standing There,' and the UK B-side, 'This Boy,' and creating an LP dominated by songs written by the Beatles themselves. What Capitol Records ended up creating was an LP that sold 3.5 million copies in two months, an unheard-of number at the time, more copies even than the 45.
This is a tribute album to the LP that introduced Americans to the Beatles. It's tremendous fun, almost as much fun as the original. The Smithereens, Beatles-influenced rockers from New Jersey, do a great job, obviously because the orignal meant so much to them as children. It's the kind of recording and song line-up that gets Americans all excited about listening to the Beatles all over again. Worth buying for Beatles fans if only to hear a version of the record that sold us the Beatles. Living as I do now in the UK, I realise that "With The Beatles" is the real thing, but "Meet The Beatles" has a place in my heart that's uniquely American. I recommend it highly.
