Description

McCann is a wily operator in the swamplands of the music business, as the skilful mix of blatant funk cliché, risqué lyrics and highly musical arrangements on Pump It Up once again shows. His voice is no longer the one that could, in the mid-60s, engagingly intone "The Great City", but the gravel that has been imported into it by age and experience suits the type of rough-house attitude displayed by the lyrics on track after track here. If you're given a kick by unreconstructed MCP reflections on the world and its women, you'll love this one. Most of the tunes are from McCann's pen (althoughmore… saxophonist Bill Evans, the album's performing highlight, also contributes two pieces), with the great Bill Withers being the only person from outside the band getting a look-in. McCann's take on "You Just Can't Smile it Away" allows him a more tuneful vocal approach, while the basic blues of "The Truth" gives him the opportunity to sample his own 1964 Pacific Jazz outing and top it off with 2001 organ overdubs from Billy Preston plus vocals from himself and Bonnie Raitt. Pretty much 100% funk, and not Les's best record, but by no means his worst. --Keith Shadwick
