I own a number of Laurie Anderson CDs and none of them is remotely as good as this. I read somewhere that the vocals were recorded with the best microphone available and whatever it cost, it's worth it. Every subtle nuance of emphasis and intonation comes through crystal clear, highlighting the multiple meanings in the lyrics, which are both intelligent and poetic. Unlike some of her other work, the words are not simply clever for their own sake, but part of something affecting and insightful. Furthermore this album hangs together as a complete work, mapping out a strange and hostile landscapemore…
