Kylie Minogue - Impossible Remixes (1999) Retail CD
The story of "Impossible Princess" is a sorry one. It's easily one of Miss Kylie Ann Minogue's most under-rated albums, despite it possibly being her finest work to date.Ten of the twelve tracks here are co-written by Minogue, with the remaining two giving Kylie sole writing credit. That's no mean feat for the girl who used to be sent out of the room while her previous producers wrote the next verse of her latest hit.Kylie embarked on a musical experimental journey for this album, adopting a lyrical style which can only be described as remarkable. Take the opening track, "Too Far" asmore… prime example... "lured into this den, it's bitter and I want the sweetness again, a taste that I agree with, get me past these perils into my eden". It's hardly "I Should Be So Lucky, Lucky, Lucky, Lucky" is it? She's come a long way since Neighbours.Sharing the album's production credits with the fantastic Brothers In Rhythm are Dave Ball, Ingo Vauk and Rob Dougan. Not forgetting Mr James Dean Bradfield, of Manic Street Preachers fame. The album takes its name from a poetry book entitled, "Poems To Break The Harts Of Impossible Princesses" by the writer, Billy Childish, who is dyslexic. Alas, the album's title was dropped in the UK following the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Following a six month delay, the album was finally released, eventually gaining silver status in the UK and tremendous success in Australia. However, here is the album, direct from Oz, as it is meant to be seen - complete with the "Impossible Princess" title. You may even be "shocked to your very foundations" with how good it is.The stand-out tracks are, sadly, those which weren't released as singles (at least in the UK). "Cowboy Style" (an Oz single release) simply shines, and marries Kylie's peculiarly strong vocals beautifully. "Drunk" - an intense dance track that would have been massive on the underground club circuit, the rapid-fire "Limbo" and "Dreams", the album's haunting closing track. It's true that she runs the gamut of musical styles on here, but when she does so as well as she does, you can hardly complain. So, open your mind and give it a go. Forget she used to be in Neighbours, forget The Loco-Motion... forget it's Kylie if you have to. Just try her for size. I'm sure she'll fit quite perfectly.Kylie Minogue? Kylie Great, more like!
