When in 1994 "Chris Botti" came to release his debut album, he invited along his musician friends to the sessions, these sessions took place between September and October of that year in "New York".The album was released the following year.This is an instrumental album except for 1 track; the album opens with a track called "Worlds Outside" which has a funky snare drum beat, which is underpinned with "Mr Botti's" trumpet playing the main theme that is then extenuated with the keyboard playing of "Paul Joseph Moore" of "Blue Nile" fame, "Mr Moore" also adds a sense of space with his use of pianomore… on this piece.The following track, which has the title "On the Night Ride", has one of my personal favourite session men playing drums on it, "Jerry Marotta" ("Jerry" plays on 4 tracks on the album) has added his significant skills playing drums to many a recording session, from "Steely Dan", to "Peter Gabriel", "Mr Marotta" the player these musicians turn to him for his musicality and sense of timing with a hint of jazz.The key song for me on the whole album is a track called "Like I do now" (which is the only track with singing) which has music written by "Chris Botti", "Paul Joseph Moore", and "Edie Brickell" with lyrics by "Ms Brickell".With the drum playing of "Mr Marotta" and the sweet vocals of "Edie Brickell" against the delicate trumpet playing of "Mr Botti" with the atmospheric keyboard playing of "P. J. Moore" which adds a feeling of longing in the song the listener can't but feel the emotion of the singer.The next 5 tracks are as good as the opening ones with hints of jazz, funk, and pop, and then the last track, which is a vignette with the longest title on the album, "A few more days, A few more weeks" lasting only 1minute and 30 seconds, but in that short space of time the playing of "P. J. Moore" and "Mr Botti" create a greater sense of atmosphere and space than a lot of whole albums do. This is an album that benefits greatly from the keyboard playing of the "Blue Nile" member "P. J. Moore".In closing a debut that may take a few plays, but the little bit of work that it takes is worth the musical rewards...
