Jorn - Dio (2010) Retail CD
Jorn Lande is certainly no stranger to the music of Ronnie James Dio, having regularly covered his songs live in concert. You can find a couple of them on his "Live In America" album. He's also made no secret of his admiration for the man, regularly citing him as a major influence in interview. However, I am the only one who finds the haste in which his new "Dio" album was released a tad on the unseemly side? After all, Ronnie James Dio would still have been warm to the touch when Jorn and his band finished this up.
Anyway, regardless of that, there is still an album of Dio covers to considermore…, although it does start off with a new, self-penned, track - 'Song For Ronnie James'. And there is no doubt it's a heartfelt tribute, as Jorn sings of the loss of a legend, liberally quoting from Dio lyrics and musically lifting from the genre Dio helped create.
If anything the song selection shows just how much of a fan Jorn Lande was, as most of the songs steer clear of the hits, as for every 'Stand Up And Shout' and 'Don't Talk To Strangers', there's a 'Lord Of The Last Day' and a 'Night People'. Jorn Lande has always had a tremendous rock voice, and he really does handle the material well. But the simple fact is, he's not Ronnie James Dio, in the same way he wasn't David Coverdale when he did his stint with Micky Moody, Bernie Marsden and Neil Murray in The (Company Of) Snakes.
He goes back as far as Rainbow for a turn on 'Kill The King' and Black Sabbath for 'Lonely Is The Word', before closing with a live version of 'Straight Through The Heart', which may well be the version from the aforementioned "Live In America". There's also a video clip for 'Song For Ronnie James' included as a bonus. The band are all excellent and under different circumstances I probably would have really enjoyed this, as the performances and musicianship is exemplary.
However, if this album was really "recorded with the sole purpose of honouring the man and wizard Ronnie James Dio", as Jorn says, then how come none of the profits are going to the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund? Even a token gesture would have removed some of the unsavoury taste from my mouth.
