Jack Bruce has never quite been able to shake free of his successful period as bassist with 1960s rock super trio Cream: even on the challenging Shadows in the Air, mostly inspired by the dark, macho urban rhythms of South America, he includes two Cream cover versions, "Sunshine of Your Love" and "White Room", enhanced by his old plank-spanker Eric Clapton. Being models of concise rock-pop, they stand out like sore thumbs among the complex polytonal and polyrhythmic structures of the rest of the album. He rails bitterly at the music business on "52nd Street", and unravels bitter tales of violencemore… and sado-masochistic cruelty elsewhere, with only the gauzy latin shimmer of "Dancing on Air" providing anything that resembles light relief. Musically it's hard to fault, with the driving percussion of Milton Cardona and Richie Flores being particularly impressive, and notable guest appearances from Dr John and Gary Moore, but there's not much here designed for whistling in the bath. --Johnny Black
