I didn't really get into The Courteeners debut album "St Jude" but recognised that there was plenty of potential there, so I was looking forward to this more mature and polished follow-up. If I'm being honest I'm a bit let-down, especially with the opening 5 or so tracks.

Things start with "The Opener", which is passable if hardly spectacular. It's followed by what I would call attempts at anthems. "Take Over the World" and "Cross my Heart & Hope to Fly" fall pretty short of Oasis or Stone Roses standards, whilst the single is really starting to wear thin, with it being played constantly on XFMmore… and the likes.

"Lullaby" is laughable lyrically. A decent piece of music utterly ruined by Fray's attempts to sound like Morrissey, the Cassius Clay line is absolutely dreadful in particular.

Luckily things to improve towards the end of the album. The chirpy "Good Times are Calling", "Last of the Ladies" and the really rather excellent "Cameo Brooch" do go someway to recovering the album, however the damage had already been done in the first few tracks to make this a quality long-player

I won't be giving up on The Courteeners just yet but they do need to improve if they are to stay around for any longer.
