It might be Valentines Day but I doubt many will be giving this album as a token of love to their special ones. Edgier than The Editors, more intense than Interpol, contemporary competitors for the Curtis Crown with whom comparisons will undoubtably be drawn, this is an album of songs of sordid sexual liaison in the dark vein of Bauhaus' "Dark Entries" and bad choice relationships. But there's more to SWR than just another Joy Division clone. Sure, the similarities in vocal style are there, as with the aforementioned Bauhaus and therefore Bowie too but the lyrics of the politics of relationshipsmore… echo a similar theme to those of Matt Johnson's The The, whilst musically there are hints of early Killing Joke, late Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Cabaret Voltaire and even Classix Nouveau. The apparent lightweight synth-pop of tracks such as 'These Things' justs adds to the macabre effect. In that respect, they come closer to the dance orientated Death In Vegas and the seedier side of The Kills. Not a bad track on here but the real standouts would be 'Sister' and 'Tear You Apart'This is the plausible Psycho-terror of a Norman Bates relative to say Marilyn Mansons' Freddy Kruger. If you like mainstream disposable pap then this won't be for you but if you like something to plumb the depths of the deepest, darkest psyche, something with an edge to it and if any of the bands referenced above appeal, you won't regret buying this album.
