Wilko Johnson developed one of the most individual guitar styles of the last thirty years - resonant of Mick Green of the Pirates, a relentless staccato blend of rhythm and lead, which backed up by his manic live performances, defined the original sound and image of Dr Feelgood, the band with which he played in the early to mid-seventies - "Stupidity", Dr Feelgood's number one live album being the epitome of this. Sadly, although Wilko probably still cuts it live, this offering is subdued in the extreme - the production dulls his guitar sound, and since his voice (which is higher in the mix)more… was never really his strong suit this doesn't make for the easiest listening. Also, the songs themselves are too similar - his songwriting has not been as consistently good since leaving Dr Feelgood, but it is particularly noticeable that the best cuts on this CD are re-workings of songs that he has already previously released. Amongst the "new" songs, "Underneath Orion" is probably the best, having more momentum than than the others. So, ultimately, this album is a little disappointing. If you want a better example of Wilko's solo work, try and find a copy of "Barbed Wire Blues" - stronger songs, and a resolutely rough'n'ready production that does the man and his band some justice - and in the meantime catch him live, as he's bound to be playing a venue near you soon enough!
