Description

Prophecy is the fourth album from Soulfly. By the time most bands reach this point they should rightfully be considered seasoned veterans, yet that tag doesn't feel quite appropriate for Max Cavalera's Soulfly. Why? Well, there's no denying the reasonable quality of many of the albums the ex-Sepultura frontman has made with his current outfit, but the fact remains that it's never quite clear exactly what he's trying to do with this new band: less adventurous than Sepultura, and with a modicum of the mainstream appeal, there remains a weird sense that with Soulfly, Cavalera is happy simply goingmore… through the thrash motions. All the same, business as usual here still means a rock album that's distinctly above average. The opening title track, in particular, is impressive enough: an apocalyptic vision of tribal warfare in the 21st Century, although whether it's intended as a literal description of events in Cavalera's native South America, or as a comment on world politics is left tantalisingly unclear. "Mars", meanwhile, sees Cavalera introducing himself as "the God of War!"--although the song is possibly more notable for a rather pleasant spot of flamenco finger-picking, courtesy of guitarist Marc Rizzo, and a rhythm that veers into a playful reggae skank towards the song's end. If Soulfly were always so willing to shake up convention, maybe they'd be one of the bands still plotting metal's future. As it is, they merely remain a reasonably good band, and Prophecy registers as merely another solid, no-frills heavy-rock album. --Louis Pattison
