I first heard this album when my darling girlfriend and I were scouring through her music collection in an attempt to find some music that would help me learn French. Out of everything it was this album which stood out by a mile (or 1.6 kilometres if I'm to be truly European)! Gerald de Palmas has a smooth guitar rock feel to his work with (dare I say it) a hint of Country. Don't get me wrong, this is by no stretch of the imagination a Country album. If it were, I wouldn't have bothered with it! The tracks have a basic rock feel which increasingly draw you into them. The guitar parts are simplemore… yet central to the whole ambience of the album. The delicate rocky beats and the simple melodies will find you shamelessly nodding your head within minutes of putting the CD on. However, in parts I felt some of the songs could have gone just a little but further, for example, the chorus of 'Tu Finiras Toute Seule' leaves you wanting more. Other parts of the album verge dangerously on that dreaded Country edge, such as 'Trop Tard', fortunately Gerald's voice reminds you that this is no Country CD. But it is 'J'En Rêve Encore' which stands out as a dreamy tune in which we see a perfect symbiosis of guitar, keyboard and vocals resulting in a wonderful little track. As I said in the title of this review, you don't need to speak French to buy this album. It's a great piece of work. It may not be on the same level as John Mayer or Ben Harper but it's close. However, if none of what I've just said has convinced you to buy it on its musical content then if nothing else it's a fantastic learning aide if you want to practice your French. Enjoy.
