I actually love this record and i'm gonna review it as no one's bothered to!
Starting with The One That Got Away it comes in with an engaging bassline and a tail of intrigue and romance as Al takes you on another ride that twists and turns at every occasion, his narrative style voice as poignant as ever.
Next up Rumours Of War is his first real attempt at electronica and is a fine eerie number that grips you with every word sung, "I can see that your dress is torn at the edge, you are lost and intense like a man on a ledge waiting to jump!". The drum march outro too works a treat for this superbmore… tune.
Accident On Third Street is another great narrative as Al mourns for some passer by run down in traffic, "They found the guy that did it. He had the lobotomy and chicken eyes!". Injecting humour into melancholy.
Night Meeting tells the grim tale of Cold War politics which is what this album is all about and is a great tune with some sharp funky guitar work which is exceptional throughout and Al really lets it out with "dont you see the contradiction of the watchmen in the towers".
Cafe Society benefits from some splendid piano breaks and sets the atmosphere quite beautifully as it depicts, well, cafe society!
Strange Girl is Al just having fun with another busted romance and is quite a charged up hard rocker of a tune sung in fast tempo with some entertaining words. Its irresistibly catchy too.
Russians And Americans is another attempt at Cold War dialogues and he pulls it off quite well with some nice acoustic guitar coming to the fore.
The Gypsy And The Rose offers up more of his trademark style of failed romance and Candidate is also another intriguing number that will certainly keep you listening all the way.
My version came with live performances of Valentina Way and an extended Year Of The Cat which are sadly not here but nevertheless this is a great record that attempts something different and is highly underrated and overlooked, but worthy to add to his collection.
