I seriously cannot get enough of this. I've been into power metal for a little over a year now and in that time I've exhausted a lot of the most popular bands (Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Dragonforce etc) and its been a pretty tough time trying to find other bands of the genre who can live up to their standards of metallic greatness. Luckily, Heavenly are just such a band.

Sure, it's not the most original album ever written and bears a lot of similarities to other post-Helloween bands. But it does everything so damn well it's impossible not to fall in love with the band. Let me tell you whymore…

1) The guitar playing is utterly fantastic. There's a great blending of traditional speed metal with some ridiculous neo-classical shredding as well as more then a few nods to more traditional metal. And can these boys solo or what? While heavenly may not bring really new here, they do it with such passion and panache that they stand out from the crowd. And when combined with such solid drumming its definitely a winner

2) The songwriting is superb. There are so many time changes, so many turns and dives and such a good mixture from the intense to the simple that your interest never wanes for long. These lads seem to be inexhaustible riff machines that just keep churning them out. I also love the contrast between the really technical stuff and sometimes they just kick back and let rip some palm mutes. Awesome. Each new listen reveals new things to love.

3) While Ben Sotto's vocals may not be every ones cup of tea, it is undeniable that he is extremely talented, able to easily shift between glass shattering high nodes and softer, more emotive singing. He's also got a bit of a knack for some King Diamond esque screeching that adds a dark, creepy edge at times. And those multilayered choruses are every bit as good as Blind Guardians.

4) While Heavenly use keyboards, unlike other power metal bands they are quit subtle in their use and contribute to the atmosphere of songs without competing with the guitars. And there's also a few softer piano moments that remind me of Queen to give a bit of variety

5) A lot of variety on the go here. We've got the fast power metal (Evil), bouncy mid paced tunes (lust for life, keepers of the earth) and longer more Prog orientated tracks (miracle, fight for deliverance) as well as the ultra cool neo-classical instrumental Hands of Darkness. Even the closing ballad Dust to Dust rocks

6) Great production. You can hear every instrument perfectly and it has a crisp mix without sounding over produced.

Sure, this isn't for everyone, and its not easy to get into as a lot of the songs are quite long and complicated. But if power metal with a smattering of prog rock is your thing, you can't go wrong here. A real undiscovered gem
