Description

With the artwork being a near copy of the famed album featuring George Shearing and Nat King Cole this CD immediately made me sit up and take notice. Forty years on, George may be greyer but the smile remains the same,and although LET THERE BE LOVE is not here, LOST APRIL is, and joined by EVERYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, recorded at the same Capitol sessions, but not released until many years later. As for John Pizzarelli, his cabaret-suited vocals have a deftness of style, with his accomplished jazz-guitar playing,blending well with the evergreen George and the Quintet. I much preferred the swingingmore… tracks which dominate this collection, with IF DREAMS CAME TRUE / THE LADY'S IN LOVE WITH YOU / LULU'S BACK IN TOWN, and BE CAREFUL IT'S MY HEART well-paced and set with flashes of musical humour,and there is appropriate scat session included on SHINE ON YOUR SHOES. Amongst the ballads are SEPTEMBER IN THE RAIN and LUCKY TO BE ME and these provide the necessary contrast. John co-wrote the title number, with George adding his name to John's on I PREDICT. Needless to say, the Shearing piano brilliance remains intact and it occurred to me that this new combination of differing generations but mutual respect and musical integrity,should become a regular feature to equal the many musical reunions George enjoyed with Mel Torme.
