Here in fine remastered form, the 1962 Interplay (like Kind Of Blue and Oliver Nelson's Blues And The Abstract Truth) mounts a powerful case for the quintet and sextet being Bill Evans's true métier, his renowned trio work notwithstanding. Originally made for Riverside, Interplay has Evans in the company of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Percy Heath and the great drummer Philly Joe Jones. The results are timelessly edifying. The title track, a blues with a hauntingly original line, elicits solos which are at once delicate and virile, "You And The Night And The Music" andmore… "You Go To My Head" are object lessons in how to bring audacious freshness to standards while respecting their ethos and structure. "When You Wish Upon A Star" is just gorgeous, especially the opening dialogue between Hubbard and Hall. But the high spot is "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams", which closes the date in unimprovably extrovert fashion. Launched by a gloriously lissom piano solo and rounded out by Hall at his most elegant and incisive, its core finds Philly Joe lighting a fire under Hubbard that encourages the trumpeter to fizz and crackle even more than usual. Interplay is a five-star session and then some, not only essential but arguably among Evans's greatest achievements. --Richard Palmer
