Any fan who got into B & S since the time of "Tigermilk", "...Sinister" or the three E.Ps probably feels the same. While "Modern Rock Song", "...Arab Strap", "Fold...", "Legal Man" and "Jonathan David" all had their moments, most will have felt that Belle & Sebastian had left their best days behind. This E.P. proves this isn't case. The title track first emerged during the summer's British tour could be described as 60s-style pop in the style of the Zombies and therefore thirty-odd years to late. But it's so brilliantly done with excellent harmonies and, crucially, would hold its ownmore… against virtually all sixties pop records without sounding like a poor imitation. Second track "I Love My Car" showcases Belle & Seb's annoying twee side without diminishing the overall quality of the E.P. The third song "Marx & Engels" is classic piano-led Belle & Seb and, along with "I'm Waking Up To Us" is among the best things they've released. Naturally, lyrically the songs stand out from everyone else around and only the likes of Pulp and Nick Cave are writing anything as interesting.In my opinion, the finest Belle & Seb E.P until this is "3...6...9 Seconds Of Light" but this pretty much up to the brilliant standards of that fine achievement.
