Description
Easy Action (1970.) Alice Cooper's second album. The classic Alice Cooper band, made up of himself, Michael Bruce, Glen Buxton, Dennis Dunaway, and Neal Smith, released their first album, Pretties For You, in 1969. Although the album was a very good one, it was lacking the sound that would make the band such a hit in the years to come. Likewise, it didn't achieve any true popularity outside of the small cult following that the band had built up. The band needed to find a way to appeal to the masses, and in 1970, they began to change their sound. That year, they released their sophomore album, Easymore… Action. This was the band's second and last album on Frank Zappa's record label How does it measure up? Read on for my review. This is the classic Alice Cooper band's transitional album, and it's on this album that they began to lean toward using the classic sound that fans would grow to love them for in the years that would immediately follow. The solid blues rocker, Mr. And Misdemeanor, kicks things off. Bluesy rock never sounded so good. With this opening track, Alice and the boys grab your attention and hold onto it tightly - exactly what the first track of an album should do. Shoe Salesman is an interesting little pop rock that is strangely reminiscent of John Lennon. This is considerably different from what you're used to hearing from the Coop, but it's still damn good. On the gloomy Still No Air, it's not the guitars or vocals, but rather Dennis Dunaway's bass playing that steals the show. It's hard to make such a bass-heavy song, much less a good one, but here the boys do it without fail. Below Your Means is a slower track. It's not one of the best tracks on the album, but it's not a bad one by any means either. Return Of The Spiders, the next track, is exactly the kind of hard rocker that you'd expect from the Alice Cooper band - and that's a good thing. The track that follows, Laughing At Me, is an interesting little composition that is the happy medium between a rocker and a ballad. Good stuff. By far the best song on the album (in my opinion) is Refrigerator Heaven. Despite the weird title, this is a classic metal song that would prove to be a premonition to many of the other underrated classic metal-style masterpieces that would be hidden on many of the band's forthcoming albums. The lengthy and mostly instrumental Beautiful Flyaway comes next. This is the longest track on the album, and despite not having very many vocals from the Coop himself, it's still an excellent song. Lay Down And Die Goodbye finishes off the album. It's a piano-heavy ballad reminiscent of the Beatles, and that's a good thing. In the end, Alice Cooper's second album is an excellent one through and through.Unfortunately (as of July 1, 2004), this album is virtually impossible to find in America, as it has long been out of print. On the good side, though, there is a foreign reissue of the album that his this album and the predecessor, Pretties For You, on a single compact disc! Although the reissue doesn't really help the poor production, it's still the best version of the album out there, since it gives you two underrated classics for the price of one.Easy Action is where Alice Cooper's band created the classic sound that would bring them so much fame in the years to come. Not too long after releasing this album, the band would get signed to a major record label, and they would make their classic rock expertise known to the masses. The band's first two albums are severely underrated, and if you're a die-hard fan of the Coop, they're well worth hunting down.
