Having bought Eros' later, immensely successful CDs I felt I had to hear what he sounded like starting out. Besides, the WebSites reverberated with references to "Cuore Agitati" and "Terra Promessa" (which he still plays in concert) and I didn't want to be in the dark. I do get the impression that BMG were trying to package him as a mid-eighties techno-bopper - the rather androgynous cover photo and the electronic backing in the first four tracks suggest that - and the opening songs therefore come as a surprise to those more used to the intricate craftmanship of his later works; "Buongiornomore… Bambina" is, frankly, hard to take. However, out of the blue comes a real nugget - "Ora" is startling in its simplicity and melodic qualities.Without doubt, the track that hints at later greatness is "Una storie importante"; a delicate opening gives way to a rousing ending which will have the hairs on the back of your neck on end - play it at full blast for best effect. Tucked in just before "Terra Promessa" - a delightful bop with wonderful "spoken" verses before a cheery chorus which brings concert-goers to their feet - is, in my view, an underrated classic. "Liberta" is an emotional ballad which Eros delivers as if his heart is on the point of breaking; a fine feat of singing indeed.Overall, the album is, unsurprisingly, a little raw but nonetheless contains enough quality to merit several listens.
