Description
The first Emperor album I had the pleasure to listen to was, sadly, their final offering: Prometheus..., IX Equlibrium is the second. Prometheus... cannot be beaten and 9E has only some of the outstanding grandeur that makes Prometheus the obvious favourite but is still an undeniable masterpiece in its own right. It would not be fair to review 9E whilst under the impressive shadow of Prometheus, as they are both progressions towards a perfection that is honed and terrifying in its execution. 9E is a fantastic sonic assault with waves of angelic sound, kind of like listening to a symphony inmore… the middle of a machine gun cross-fire. Curse you all men employs both the energetic riffs and screams of any decent Slayer offering together with the deft time changes and musical ear of Mozart or Beethoven - no, really. It's like a force that cannot be reckoned with. Until you hear Decrystallising Reason, which is a slower but no less merciful beast. The final section is awe-inspiring and quite breathtaking. The Flight of Icaros is equally as melodic and expertly tight. It is like listening to the secrets of the universe, like finding out the meaning of life, in a word - unbelievable. The Source of Icon E and Sworn are not favourites of mine but nevertheless, they kick some rather impressive ass. We get back to the real meat of Emperor's reign on the title track and the unstoppable, Iron Maiden-esque rumbling of Warriors of Modern Death. It is an experience like existing in a fantasy world akin to Tolkien's Middle Earth, only real and scary. Of Subsequent Seers etc finishes the precedings off nicely, in true epic style.Nobody expected them to better such an effort, but they did anyway. It almost felt like they were showing off when they unleashed Prometheus. But for all its shortcomings in light of their final masterpiece, 9E is a masterpiece all on its own and on its own merits.A little warning, though - don't expect to like it on the first listen. Give it a good 2 or 3. Then just lie back and let the tunes appear.I envy you.
