A collection of 15 re-recorded classic songs, Souvenirs is a series of snapshots of world-weary protagonists trapped in the circumstances of their lives. Listeners familiar only with the numerous cover versions of Prine's work may be surprised to hear these songs stripped of all sentimentality or romance. His reworked "Angel From Montgomery", (beautifully covered, if sweetened, by Bonnie Raitt) is a masterpiece of the confessional singer-songwriter canon and Prine's voice has matured and cracked sufficiently over the years to lend this bleak testimony to an old woman's plight a frightening, desolatemore… honesty. Like the best country writers of old, Prine can paint a vivid portrait using a handful of simple, poetic images and, refreshingly, he never offers solutions, just documents the hard-won reality. As he states in "Far From Me", "a question ain't really a question if you know the answer, too". Over gentle acoustic guitar and sparse accompaniment, this is Prine at his best, revealing the heart of his songs and the hearts of his subjects, dispossessed and caught in transition. --Matt Dean
