James Cameron's 'The Terminator' is a classic sci-fi masterpiece. More so is 'T2: Judgement Day,' one of those rare sequels that surpass the original. Over these two films a fantastic apocolyptic mtythology was created that was unfortunately scuppered by a rubbish second sequel. When I heard a third sequel was planned I was fairly non-plussed until I saw the awesome looking trailers starring Christian 'The Dark Knight' Bale as John Connor. Although Cameron was not involved and the director (McG?!?) was responsible for the dreadful Charlie's Angels films I still went to see it with high hopesmore….

Terminator Salvation is set in 2018 after Skynet initiated nuclear war on mankind. In the post 'judgement day' world, small groups of surviving humans battle against machine armies intent on their total anhiliation. John Connor leads the resistance.

Terminator Salvation is actually quite a good film which departs from the template of the originals. This is not a frantic chase movie but instead a movie about survival against overwhelming odds and despite the bleak outlook it actually manages to be good fun. Outrageously exciting action sequences are strung together by the story of John Connor searching for a teenage Kyle Reese who will eventually be sent back to the 1980s to protect Sarah Connor from the original T-800 Terminator who was sent by Skynet to kill her so John Connor could never be born (confused?) Also in the mix is a stranger called Marcus White who is haunted by memories of his execution on death row in the year 2003 and his deal with a company called Cyberdyne who were eager for him to donate his body to their research scientists.

So is Terminator Salvation good? Yes it is. The effects and central performances are great and the story nicely ties in with the originals. The machines are pretty scary looking from the creepy looking T-600s to the huge Harvesters which collect human beings to the snake like hydrobots patrolling the waters, the terminators remain close to the original films. The only problem is that the ending seems a little rushed. The resistance assault against Skynet is fairly inconclusive but I suppose they were eager to leave room for further films telling the events leading up to the originals. Terminator Salvation is an enjoyable watch but it is more Transformers than T2 (but still miles better than T3!)
