Description

In DISTRICT 9, an alien spacecraft hovers above Johannesburg for years before the aliens on board take refuge in the slums. After the locals begin rioting with the aliens (known as "Prawns"), the government decide to move the aliens out of District 9 and move them to District 10. The documentary style film follows a small group as they go around District 9 advising the aliens that they are evicted, until one of them gets sprayed by an alien substance which has very dangerous side-effects.

I saw this film recently while I was in the States and it was very well made - the production was very highmore… budget which is very clear from the impressive visual effects. The aliens/prawns appear to be very realistic and are believable. The story was very clever with an interesting style, first being presented in more of a news story or documentary style and then moving on to just follow the lead character, Wikus (Sharlto Copley) who has been sprayed by the alien substance.

The one problem I did find with this film is that the lead character is absolutely hilarious, which I'm not sure whether is supposed to be intentional or not, but took a lot of the seriousness of the film away and made it feel like we were being lead around District 9 by Borat! Either way, it was an enjoyable film that I look forward to seeing again soon and will most likely buy once it is available. Well worth a watch.
