Noah and The Whale's second album 'The First Days Of Spring' is anything other and a whole lot more.

It's a predominantly sad affair. The microscopic emotional examination of a lost love affair.
Self-indulgence is always a risk when picking over the bones of something that might have been
but Charlie Fink and his cohorts manage to avoid bathos by keeping more than a strand of hope in the mix.

The first four songs we encounter are very sad, almost desolate, expressions of hurt and loneliness.
The funereally slow progress of opening track 'The First Days Of Spring'; the intimate reflections
of 'Our Window', followed by 'I Have Nothing' and 'My Broken Heart', with their vivid depiction
of dispossession and grief are almost unbearable in their forthright stripped-down candour.

Suddenly, however, with 'Love Of An Orchestra' things start looking up. Curiously so !
The jaunty choral introduction and sprightly rhythmic progression of the composition sweeps the
cobwebs away with one wild surreal sweep of the kitchen broom.

'Stranger' gives an intimate glimpse of what it is like for one man to tentatively start again.
Claustrophobic yet somehow hopeful.

The healing and optimism continue to grow through the lovely 'Blue Skies' and 'Slow Glass'.

With final track 'My Door Is Always Open' the catharsis would appear to be just about complete.
The sensuous pedal-steel guitar arabesques are a delightful inclusion.
The up-tempo conclusion leads us out of the woods and into the light.

Somewhere near home and almost dry the journey has been an arduous and grueling one.

The story, however, was well-told and more than worth sharing.

I was glad I hitched a ride.
