Description
The title, cover and sleeve note, in which Hill claims he wants to start “communicating with the people”, all raise alarm bells. This was 1968 and Hill was clearly under pressure to deliver a commercial soul-jazz album. Yes, there’s a track called “Soul Special” and a sweetish latin-jazz tune “Mira”. But have no fear – if this was a sell out, it must be the classiest sell out of all time. Hill’s compositions and arrangements are as beautiful and complex as ever, and the ventures into groove-based rhythm don’t sound contrived but sound like just another musical colour for Hillmore…
