Description

This is one weird set of recordings. These two live recordings are usually given as absolute must-have Dolphy CDs, but I don't think so. I love the abstraction, the far-outness of Dolphy's studio releases.
On these live sets, though, his bizarre mix of somehow childlike playfulness and avant-garde seriousness are contrasted against a rather ordinary rhythm section. In fact, a surprisingly ordinary one, given Blackwell on drums. Somehow, this doesn't work for me. There is too wide a gap between what Dolphy is doing and what everybody else is doing. Also, other than with Coltrane, I don't feelmore… Dolphy's music benefits from over-long soloing. His statements are quickly made, and I find myself waiting for the band to move along to the next piece. Then they don't.
Interesting enough, and a must-have for diehard fans of Dolphy, and of Booker. But really one of Dolphy's weaker efforts, somehow watered down.
