It seemed a pity that in his last years Mulligan gave up his big band because over decades it had been one of the most exciting of them all. But here, half a dozen years before he died, he seems to be investigating his own baritone playing, in tandem with a fine clutch of 10 new tunes, all but one by Mulligan. His themes go back to the 1940s and they were usually built like Rome, for he was a meticulous perfectionist. He used to drive the men in the big band mad with his never-ending hair-splitting rehearsals. Such is his genius, for that is what he was. The music this 1989 quartet playedmore… was sensitive and beautiful and many of the songs will probably join earlier Mulligan compositions as classics as the years go by. Tunes like "Splendour In The Grass", "Rico Apollo" and "Ring Around A Bright Star" have all the ear- grabbing quality of his earlier works. "The Flying Scotsman" was written for the big band and is one of his "train" songs. The saxophone solos are much enhanced by the piano solos and accompaniment from Bill Charlap, one of the most gifted jazz pianists of the day. -- Steve Voce
