Two years ago I don't think I had even heard of the late, great Arthur Alexander. I knew one of his songs, "You Better Move On", from The Rolling Stones' 1964 cover, and I'd probably heard "Anna (go to him)" as performed by The Beatles, but the name Arthur Alexander meant nothing to me.Fortunately, that is no longer the case. Once you slip this wonderful disc into your CD player, you'll be amazed at how many of these sixteen songs you actually know.Arthur Alexander was one of the great soul singers and songwriters, in the same league as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye; the man behindmore… "Shot Of Rhythm & Blues" (another early Beatles favorite), "Anna", "Everyday I Have To Cry Some" and "Call Me Lonesome".Alexander had a pleasant, soulful tenor and an unforced vocal delivery, and this album is the best way to enjoy his tremendous songwriting skills. "Anthology" is certainly the best available Arthur Alexander-collection available, filled with great melodies and featuring all of his best work. A few slightly weaker tracks makes it a little less than a perfect *****, but that's a minor complaint; most of what is here is simply great.
