Christian Death - Atrocities (1999) Retail CD
If one band managed to beat Bauhaus in terms of silly pretentiousness that band was Christian Death, no more so than when Valor was at the helm. "Atrocities" was released a year before "Scriptures", a concept album that was subtitled "A translation of world beliefs"! By the mid-1980s Valor was so deep into world religions that he began proclaiming the coming of The Apocalypse in 1999 (and his intention to flee it) based on his interpretation of holy books and misinterpreted Nostradamus verses. The attacks on the hypocrisy of institutional religion that became Valor's trademark in later albumsmore… are not evident on this rather bleak album that focuses on the horrors of political extremism. References to Nazi concentration camps and the gulags can be found on most songs. This is Christian Death's best work with Valor as lead vocalist. Flanked by Gitane Demone and David Glass (he who has "command of his Dominion of Drums" according to the sleeve notes!) Valor's Christian Death produced three great albums in "Atrocities", "Scriptures" and "Past, Present and Forever" and also the excellent single "Sick of Love". It is Demone's influence that provides the some of the highlights here; the sensual "Tales of Innocence" with her soaring vocals is the best song on the album. She also performs a version of "Gloomy Sunday", the sad lament to a dead lover, but to hear a truly outstanding performance of this one should seek out Diamanda Galas' recording on "The Singer". Other outstanding songs are the opener "Will-o'-the-Wisp" and "Chimere de-si de-la". The album captures a sound that later became orthodox goth with simple guitar riffs and lots of echo and delay. Sadly many of the later (abysmal) goth bands simply copied this sound and failed to produce anything of worth. This work is Valor's Christian Death at their creative peak, a bleak album that is all the more so when one considers the bands it influenced produced nothing but drivel and effectively killed the goth scene with their lack of talent and humour.
