Description
While this is not as spectacular as the '56 Newport concert, or indeed many of the other works from this period like Anatomy of a Murder, this is still a fine set. Johnny Hodges is subdued but still the finist altoist that ever lived, Jimmy Hamilton is superlative in Passion Flower, and Billy Strayhorn relishes the unacustomed limelight in Tonk and Take the 'A' Train. To hear him play this is worth the price alone. While Cat Anderson's El Gato is a brilliant showpiece for his ear-splitting talents, my favourite track is Mr. Gentle and Mr. Cool - Ray Nance's teasing pizzicato bring out the bestmore…
