Musically this set finds the Jazztet in top form but the CD reissue is faulty and incomplete, only including seven of the nine selections from the studio date Big City Sounds and four of the six numbers from the concert The Jazztet at Birdhouse. Why the "sampler" approach to such valuable and historical material? The Jazztet recorded six albums during 1960-62 before breaking up and this single CD has "highlights" from the second and fourth dates; a two-CD set would have allowed GRP/Chess to reissue the complete contents of the group's second, fourth and third dates. In any case, the music is excellentmore…, featuring trumpeter Art Farmer, tenor-saxophonist Benny Golson and trombonist Tom McIntosh along with pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Tommy Williams and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. Golson's writing (four of his compositions are here) and arranging gave this group its own sound. Highpoints include "Hi-Fly," the atmospheric "Five Spot After Dark," "Con Alma," "Farmer's Market" and a lengthy "'Round Midnight." This CD is worth picking up until GRP (or its European equivalent) gets around to reissuing the material properly.
