Dolly is my favorite singer and has been since I bought my first Dolly album, Here you come again, when I started collecting records. That was a few weeks before the release of this disappointing album and I wonder how differently things might have been had this been my first Dolly album. I don't mind that it is more pop than country - so was Here you come again - but it seems that Dolly tried just too hard to please the pop fans, forgetting about the quality of the actual songs.There are some great tracks here. Baby I'm burning is a great slice of disco - if this can't make you get up and dancemore…, nothing will. Nickels and dimes, perhaps the nearest Dolly gets to country on this album, is an outstanding song about when she was a struggling singer. It's too late to love me now is another great song, but other, less famous, singers (Jeanne Pruett, Charly McClain) have done better versions. The two country number ones, Heartbreaker and I really got the feeling, are OK without being great, as is The man. The other tracks are mediocre. We're through forever features Dolly's brother-in-law as a duet singer but it just doesn't work. Dolly wrote the other three (Sure thing, With you gone, I wanna fall in love) but more work on the lyrics should have been done.Because there are some great songs here among the mediocrity, I'll give the album three stars - but it reminds us that even a brilliant singer like Dolly has off days.
